Chapter Eleven
The Expansion
Things at the brothel were going well, so well that the owners decided to expand. Why not? You can’t have too much of a good thing, right? Then it’s settled. We’ll build a hotel and a full-service spa. No “happy endings” in this spa, though. You’d have to go over to the brothel for that. Meetings were held, plans were drawn, and before you knew it, we were moving dirt. There wouldn’t be another brothel like this anywhere in the world.
Fernando’s maintenance shop was demolished. We’d build him a new one. Poor Fernando, he had to work out of a forty-foot storage container throughout the hot summer.
Construction started slowly. If there was a line buried underground, the construction crew found it and broke it. They broke water lines, power lines, even the gas line. This was more like destruction than construction. Every time I turned around, construction came to a screeching halt due to some sort of broken line. The fire line was the worst. I remember the construction foreman coming into the brothel, yelling for me.
“Madam, we have a slight problem.”
“You couldn’t have broken another line, you broke them all already.”
“No, ma’am, there was one we missed, but we got it today … the fire line. It seems we flooded quite a few acres.”
The fire line, a water line that fed the brothel’s fire system, was an eighteen-inch steel pipe.
“How the hell could you break the fire line?”
“We were digging with the backhoe, ma’am.” He almost sounded proud of himself, as if it was quite an accomplishment to break the fire line. I was ready to kill him!
I followed the foreman out to the construction site. I went traipsing through muck in my Nordstrom shoes. Are you kidding me? Now I’m really pissed. Forget the fire line, what about my shoes?
It took weeks for the area to dry out. When we started up construction again, here came the monsoons. A week of rain, just what we needed. It took another week to dry things out and we were ready to start again.
Things started looking up. The framing was done; it was beginning to look like something now. The weather was working in our favor; it appeared the worst was over. Sure, maybe for someone else, but not for me!
The housing market was booming in Las Vegas. People were bidding against one another to buy homes. Homes were selling for far more than they were worth. The builders jumped on the bandwagon and construction in Las Vegas was everywhere. It didn’t matter what part of town you were in, they were building. The federal Bureau of Land Management was auctioning off thousands of acres of public land on the edges of Las Vegas and developers were buying them up as soon as they became available. The price of building supplies skyrocketed. Everyone was making tons of money and people were still coming to Las Vegas in droves. Real estate agents were making a fortune. Houses wouldn’t be on the market for more than a day before they were snapped up.
